Vasectomy side effects and surgical complications

No surgical procedure is completely safe. As with any surgical procedure, vasectomy may have some side effects. However, the male sterilization surgery fails in very rare cases and major complications are rare.

  • Pain. This is one of the most encountered side effects. Any pain should stop after about a week. Experience shows most pain respond well to mild analgesics. Chronic pain is experienced by some men.

  • Infection. After vasectomy operation a small amount of bruising, redness and swelling is normal. If you develop a temperature or the swelling is not going down, increases or becomes very painful, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Granulomas. They are a benign (non cancerous) lump, and may developed as a result of leakage of sperm from the cut end of the vas into the scrotal tissues resulting in an inflammatory reaction. This lump may be sensitive or painful or to pressure or touch and is generally treated with anti-inflammatory agents. Vasectomy surgery failure in cancerous granulomas are extremely rare.

  • Epididymitis. It occurs when inflammation at the site of the vasectomy can causes swelling of the epididymis (the tightly-coiled tube connecting the efferent ducts from the rear of each testicle to its vas deferens). Swelling should subside within about one week.

  • Abscesses. They are rare and are the result of infection from the operation or picked up post operatively.

  • Impotence, premature ejaculation and painful intercourse. In special cases erectile dysfunction or decreased sexual desire can develop forms of impotence, premature ejaculation or painful intercourse. Doctors believe that the cause is mostly psychological in nature and the vasectomy only exacerbates previous difficulties and problems between sexual partners. Counseling and investigation is required to resolve difficulties.

Some studies have linked vasectomy to kidney and prostate cancer, but the evidence is contradictory and more research is required in this area.

The good news is that almost all side effects may be avoided following vasectomy surgery precautions before after operation
